  • Meeting October 6th

Our Wednesday meeting featured Col David Beck brought to us by Terrell Kerr. He was one of those people you would like to sit down with a cup of coffee and talk to for a couple of hours.  Joined the Marines actually before graduating from college (UT) and said he always wanted to fly. They taught him how which gave him the opportunity to fly in combat missions. He eventually decided to further his education and went back to school and obtained a law degree. Evidently he was quite good at being a lawyer and was picked to defend or prosecute several high profile cases. He says he always falls back on what his father taught him; do the right thing and you know what that is. He stated he was also taught to seek first the kingdom of God. If he is willing I think it’s safe to say we would have him back again.

We met at the Southern Railway location, Marianne has done a great job with the building and for us persons growing up in Knoxville it’s a trip down memory lane. Next door to Marianne is a winery, didn’t know that, I need to get out more!

Next Week: Larry Vaugh will be here to tell us what is happening with Sertoma nationally, and how bright is our future. I believe he is the governor now and should have most of the answers.

On October 19 Chris Hoosier is bringing someone from the Ice Bears. I understand there are people who think of hockey the same way most of you men view football. Should be different and interesting.

On October 26 Mike McKinney is bringing the new clinical director at UT. Don’t have a name.

Record keeping:  Andy Schoerner prayed, Brett Grimm led the pledge, with a 2-way tie on grid pick  that the other person didn’t put their name on the slip  Ron Grimm got the money.

    Meeting 9-21-16

    Habitat for Humanity’s Kelle Shultz

Jacob introduced Kelle Shultz who is a Knoxville native and an English major from UT. She has been with Habitat for 22 years and evidently loves her job. Last December Habitat celebrated building their 500th house. It takes sixteen months for a person to go through the program to actually get a house (and they get to help build it also); during the wait they have programs for them to attend on building, landscaping, etc. Once the house is completed they purchase the house at no interest. If the house comes back to Habitat (the homeowner moves to a bigger house or leave the city/state) Habitat is now selling these houses to veterans. She went on to say they have five families from the Sertoma Center living in Habitat houses. They also have a thrift store and are looking for donations in good conditions, if you have a yard sale and it doesn’t sell there, they probably don’t want it either. However, if you’re looking for a bargain come over and check them out.

Mike reported on the board meeting that the biggest discussion was on Oktoberfest. It is two and a half weeks away, we have six different beer distributors, we do not have to purchase additional insurance to cover the alcohol consumption due to MaryAnn’s will cover this event. Saved us big bucks. On Friday, Oct. 7 the Foundry will open at 9 am to start the process of setting up, everyone is welcome to help. We still need brown bag items and silent auction items, gift cards, jewelry, wine etc.

Mike also announced the annual meeting next year will be in Kansas City, MO and you should start now planning to attend. They are working on reducing the cost to get better attendance.

NEXT WEEK: “If the creek don’t rise”, we will have Senator Becky Massey to tell us what is going on in Washington brought to us by Rusty Farrell.

Record keeping: Marianne Greene prayed, Sierra Tippens led the pledge and Jacob Tippens won the grid pick.
